It was a large family with 2 boys and 4 girls, ages 8-17 and a result, the mom was often quite busy with discipline matters in the home.  Everyone in the house was subjected to corporal punishment, regardless of their age.  There were basically two levels of discipline in the home, the lower end involving a very heavy, leather belt that every kid felt on a fairly regular basis.  The next step up was a small boat oar that their mom had bought at a garage sale many years ago, and when that paddle came out, they knew they were in for it.
